Muscle cars were once as popular as Coca-Cola in America. The Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Charger, and Pontiac Trans Am come to mind when one thinks about American muscle cars.
These are undoubtedly classic muscle vehicles, but there are many more that have gone unnoticed.
The golden years of the American muscle car were the late 1960s and early 1970s, and there are plenty of models to choose from when compiling a “best of” list.
The torque of these cars, which is notorious for laying down the rubber on short run tracks, is astonishing, as is the horsepower of the V8 engines most usually utilized to power them. Here is our list of the best and most unique muscle cars.
1. 1967 Pontiac GTO
The 1967 Pontiac GTO is considered the pinnacle of muscle car design. It had three engine options for its 400 cubic inch engine: economy, standard, and high output.
The normal engine has a power output of 335 horsepower, while the high-output engine has a power output of 360 horsepower.
To become the fastest road automobile, the engine was modified extensively. The Pontiac GTO was named the year’s most powerful automobile. Source
2. 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona
This model was produced in a limited edition with the goal of winning NASCAR races following past failures. Dodge nailed it with this car, which won the Talladega 500 the following fall.
This iteration broke the 200 mph barrier at the race, and it was only the start of a good run at the circuit, as the 29170 Plymouth Superbird that succeeded it went on to win the event the following year. Source
3. 1969 Ford Boss 429 Mustang
The 1969 and 1970 Ford Boss 429 Mustang is a high-performance muscle vehicle. In 1969, 859 Bosses were produced, and many of them are still in use today.
The car’s official rated power is 375 horsepower, however other reports suggest that it can produce over 600 horsepower.
Each Ford Boss 429 is now worth more than $220,000. A 1969 Ford Boss 429 sold for $417,000 in 2013. Source
4. 1970 Dodge Coronet R/T 426 Hemi Convertible
Road and Track is represented by the R/T in the name. With 425 horsepower, the Dodge Coronet competes with every other brand in 1970. Only four Hemi convertibles were produced, making it the rarest muscle car in the world.
The 440 cubic inch engine is standard on all Dodge Hemi models, and the 1968 Dodge Coronet had the same engine. A Dodge Hemi Convertible sold for $300,000 in 2014. Source
5. 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454
The Chevelle SS 454 is considered by some to be the king of muscle cars, despite the fact that many of the legendary muscle cars on this list have been brutishly powerful symbols.
With a 450-horsepower LS6 engine, a 4-barrel 800 CFM Holley carburetor, and 500 ft-lb of torque, it was a true beast capable of reaching speeds of 150 miles per hour.
Though a 454 cubic-inch LS5 engine was available, it produced significantly less horsepower (360) and is today far less collectible than a mint condition car with the LS6.
The Chevelle’s attraction, though, extends far beyond its huge power potential. It was a popular model with a plush interior and sports car-like handling that outperformed other muscle cars at the time.
6. 1968 Chevrolet Camaro
With straight-six engines and 140 horsepower, the first model Chevrolet Camaro was introduced in 1968.
There are various transmission options available on the first-generation Camaros. The automobiles are divided into three categories: RS, SS, and Z28. The Z28 is a high-performance muscle automobile with a V8 engine that produces 302 horsepower.
The Camaro’s advanced version has a 427 cubic inch V8 engine and a four-speed manual transmission. Source
7. 1970 Plymouth Barracuda
Between 1970 and 1974, Plymouth produced the 1970 Plymouth Barracuda, a two-door muscle automobile. A total of 440 Barracudas were produced, with three different engine options.
A 440 cubic inch 7.2 L V8 engine with 425 horsepower is the engine with the highest specification. Its final model, introduced in 1974, came in full-size and convertible versions. Source
